How many tenses are there in English?
There are three tenses in English according to old grammatical and there are two tenses according to modern grammatical.
So let’s go with the old approach because old is easy understand the sentence formation. Below are the three types tense in English as per Old grammatical method. We will learn the modern approach once we familiar with the old approach.
  1. Present Tense
  2. Past Tense
  3. Future Tense

Present Tense

What is the definition of present tense?

Present tense indicates an action, even or a work which is currently going on, continuously performed or happening on a regular basis. Present tense is divided into four forms. They are mentioned below:
  • Simple Present
  • Present Progressive
  • Present Perfect
  • Present Perfect Progressive
1. Simple Present (Subject + base form of verb)( add “s” to third person singular(He, She, Ram, TOM, etc…)

What is Simple Present Tense?

Simple present tense is normally a kind of action or event or work which is real, factual or which often occurs. Something happens again and again but not right now.

Examples:
I go
You dance
You Play
We laugh
He Sings
She plays
TOM cooks

2. Present Progressive (Subject + am/is/are + base verb(+ing))

What is present progressive tense?
Present progressive indicates actions that are going on now, happening now or that are in progress at the moment.

Examples:
I am going
You are dancing
You are playing
We are laughing
He is singing
She is playing
TOM is cooking

3. Present Perfect (Subject + have/has/had + past participle of verb)

What is present perfect tense?
Present perfect tense indicates actions that occurred in the past but time is not specified. It means we are telling something occurred in the past but we do not mention any time, day, month year.

Examples:
I have gone
You have danced
You have played
He has Sang
She has played
Tom has cooked

4. Present perfect Progressive (Subject + have/has + been + base verb(+ing))

What is present perfect progressive tense?
Present perfect progressive says about actions that started, occurred, begun in the past and still continue to the present.

Examples:
I have been going
You have been dancing
You have been playing
He has been singing
She has been playing
Tom has been cooking
