This article explains about 8 parts of speech in the English language.

English Language is very important in world. To become a fluent English speaker, we must know the parts of speech in the English language. There are eight parts of speech in the English language:

  1. Noun
  2. Pronoun
  3. Verb
  4. Adjective
  5. Adverb
  6. Preposition
  7. Conjunction
  8. Interjection

Part of speech states how the word acts, works or functions in meaning and grammatically in a sentence. An individual word can act or function more than one part of speech in different circumstances. It is very important to understand the parts of speech to know the correct definition of a word. So let’s understand the 8 parts of the speech of English language.

NOUN (Person, Place, Thing, Idea or Feeling)

A noun is a word that indicates a person, place, thing, idea or feeling.

Human / Bangalore / Laptop / happiness …..

Nouns are divided into seven types: common noun, proper noun, concrete noun, abstract noun, collective nouns, count and mass nouns. Nouns can function in different ways within a sentence. For  example: a noun can be a subject, direct object, indirect object, subject complement, or object of a preposition.

Examples: 

The little girl brought me a very long letter from the teacher, and then she quickly disappeared.
He is staying in America.
Kid expresses its love through a cute smile.

PRONOUN (Replacement of noun)

A pronoun is a word which is replaces the noun or which is used in the place of a noun.

He / She / we / they / it / I / Me / His / Her / Its…….

Pronoun is one of parts of speech in the English language. A word, which is used in place of a noun within a sentence. Pronouns are divided by type: personal pronouns, possessive pronoun, reflexive pronoun, relative pronoun, demonstrative pronouns.

He is John’s brother.
Maria is her daughter
John bought a book for his sister.

VERB (An Action or State/Situation/Being)

A verb expresses an action or a state that is real.

Dance / Is / Write / become .....

Verb is another component of parts of speech in the English language. Verbs are divided into 10 types. There is a verb called “helping verb” which basically used before the main verb. Verbs are presented in different forms to express tenses.

He Dances Very well.

ADJECTIVE (Info about Noun or Pronoun)

An adjective gives or describes info of a noun or pronoun in nature.

Beautiful... old... yellow... Intelligent

An adjective is a word which is used to add additional quality of a noun or pronoun in nature. It is likely: which one, what kind, or how many.

Examples:

The little girl brought me a very long letter from the teacher, and then she quickly disappeared.
He is very intelligent
She is beautiful

ADVERB (Describes a verb, adjective or adverb)

An adverb is a word that modifies or describes a verb, an adjective, or an another adverb.

Normally / extremely / carefully / well

An adverb usually gives a kind of answer to the questions like where, how, when, why, under what conditions, under what circumstances, to what degree. An Adverb often ends with “ly” letters.

Examples:

The young girl brought me a very long letter from the teacher, and then she quickly disappeared.
John sings very well.

PREPOSITION

A preposition is a word which is placed before a noun or pronoun to form a phrase that modifies another word in the sentence.

From / Within / by / with / about / until / during / before ……

(by the cooker, with my family, about the book, until tomorrow)

A preposition is a word that expresses the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word. Therefore a preposition is always part of a prepositional phrase. The prepositional phrase almost always functions as an adjective or as an adverb. The following list includes the most common prepositions:

Examples:

You should have confident within yourself to be become a good speaker.
I will send you the books by courier.
The teacher was teaching us about verb.
I usually travel to Switzerland during winter.

CONJUNCTION (A word that connects)

A conjunction  is a word that joins or connects words, phrases, or clauses.

And / but / or / while / because

A conjunction is a word that connects or joins words, phrases, or clauses, and expresses the relationship between them. Conjunctions are divided in many groups but often we come across two types: Coordinating conjunction that connects grammatically equal elements: and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet. Subordinating conjunction that connects clauses that are not equal: because, although, while, since, etc.

Examples:
The little girl brought me a very long letter from the teacher, and then she quickly disappeared.
I think you can do this work but be careful
You or John has to finish this work.
He did not invite me to his birthday party because other day we had an argument.

INTERJECTION (Expression or emotion)

An interjection is a word that states about an emotion or expression.

Oh! / Wow! / Oops!

Interjection is a kind of emotion which you express by a exclamatory word. It is some sort of sudden feelings you express surprisingly.  It is often followed by an exclamation point “!”.

Examples:

The little girl brought me a very long letter from the teacher, and then she quickly disappeared. Oh my!
Wow! She is gorgeous.
Oops! I did it in wrong way.
